When you are following recommended guidelines it can be baffling when your dog does not behave accordingly! You may have even seen them doing it perfectly with an expert, yet you can't get the same response. Here's some tips for when it is all going wrong!

🙈 Stay Calm! Don't lose your temper as it will make the dog's energy respond to yours; shouting and running about is like a game to them.

🙉 If possible turn away from your dog and ignore them if the behaviour isn't dangerous. If it is, distract them with something better - toy, affection, treat away from the location of their problem behaviour. Only give attention to the behaviour you want.

🙊 Go back to the beginning steps of the training task where the dog can succeed again. When you have the dog obeying again, finish the training session on that positive note.

🐵 Don't give up, as above, just go back a stage before ending training so that the unwanted behaviour isn't the last thing you do together. Do finish training sessions with playtime, affection and other rewards.

🐒 Have a friend or professional watch your behaviour, body language and timing to make sure you are not doing something to change the outcome of the task. I.e. Giving verbal praise too early.
